2019 Competitions
Held at the Mid-Atlantic Flute Convention

General Competition Rules, applies to all competitions:

    • A applicant must be current FSW member (renewal date must be November 2, 2018 or later). Note: Young Artist Competition requires a full FSW membership. You may join or renew at fsw.net.
    • A applicant must complete the online application located at https://fsw.net. The application form, recording, and fees must be submitted by Thursday, November 1, 2018, 5:00 pm EST. No late entries will be accepted.
    • A link to upload your audio file can be found on your registration receipt, which is emailed when the fee is paid. 
    • If entering more than one competition, a separate application and audio file must be completed and uploaded for each competition.
    • The recording MUST be a mp3, mp4 or wav file. A video recording will not be accepted. Only ONE file per competition should be uploaded. If more than one requirement is listed, selections must be presented in the exact order listed combined in a single file. If you need help combining or converting music files, search online for a music file editor or converter/joiner. There are many online free programs.
    • Name the audio file using your name (first and last name) as listed on the application (example: SusanCook.mp3).
    • The recording should demonstrate the highest possible audio quality so your performance can be evaluated successfully. No speaking on the recording. Only a continuous performance of the entire work or movement is allowed. Recordings must not be edited or contain studio-produced effects. By uploading a music file, an applicant agrees their recording is continuous and unaltered.
    • Results will be available on the FSW.net website on or before Monday, January 7, 2019.
    • Accompanists are the responsibility of the finalists for competitions. Master class performers and the Adult Amateur Performers may use the staff accompanist or provide one at their own expense. Use of staff accompanist must be selected on your application.
    • Use of staff accompanist includes actual performance and a twenty (20) minute rehearsal. Additional rehearsal time is available for a fee and based on availability. 
    • Flutists may enter more than one competition but will only be selected to participate in one event or competition at the flute convention.
    • A preliminary or final round performance in excess of the maximum performance time allotted WILL disqualify the applicant.
    • Incomplete applications will be subject to disqualification.
    • Application fees and membership dues are not refundable.
    • The decision of the judges is final.
    • All competitions EXCEPT the Young Artist Competition are limited to performers who live or attend school in the Mid-Atlantic States (Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, North Carolina, West Virginia, Washington, DC, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania).

Young Artist Competition

The Young Artist Competition is for outstanding flutists, under the age of 30 (as of February 1, 2019, who have completed an undergraduate degree at a college, university, or conservatory.  Cash prizes ($1,000, $750 and $500) will be awarded. Previous first prize winners are not eligible to participate. There is no residency requirement.

    1. Application fee $40.
    2. Preliminary round – a recording containing the following selections:
      1. Telemann Fantasie – #9 E Major: Affettuoso and Allegro, with repeats and ornamentation at performer’s discretion.
      2. Repertoire of the applicant’s choice, not to exceed 15 minutes. All works for flute and keyboard must be recorded using both instruments.
    3. Final round repertoire – Telemann Fantasie #9 (same movements from preliminary round) and at least two selections of the applicant’s choice (may be different from preliminary round selections). The repertoire should cover at least two periods of music. Your final round performance will begin with the required music selection. The final round repertoire submitted on the online application cannot be changed. Total maximum time is 20 (twenty) minutes including the required selection and time between movements.

Collegiate Soloist Competition

    The Collegiate Soloist Competition is for outstanding flutists, under the age of 28 (as of February 1, 2019), who are enrolled as an undergraduate at a college, university, or conservatory located in a Mid-Atlantic state as defined above, or have their residence of record in a Mid-Atlantic state as defined above. Finalists will be selected on the basis of their recorded audition to compete at the Convention. Cash prizes ($300, $200 and $100) will be awarded. Previous first prize winners are not eligible to participate.

      1. Application fee $25
      2. Preliminary round – a recording containing Mozart’s Andante in C Major followed by music for flute and piano of applicant’s choice, not to exceed 10 (ten) minutes. Individual movements from compositions are acceptable. Selections must be recorded with piano.
      3. Final round repertoire – Corrente from JS Bach Partita in A minor with repeats and ornamentation at performer’s discretion and Katherine Hoover’s Kokopelli.

    Honors Competition Competition

    This competition is for outstanding flutists in grade 12 and under, who attend school or are home-schooled in a Mid-Atlantic state as defined above. Three finalists will be selected on the basis of their recording from each division. Cash prizes will be awarded. Previous first prize winners are not eligible to participate in the same division. The decision of the judges is final. All works for flute and keyboard must be recorded using both instruments.

      1. Application fee $20
      2. Preliminary round - recording containing the following selection based on the division the applicant is entering: Senior Division (grades 10-12) - A Night Piece, Arthur Foote (Southern Music); Junior Division (grades 7-9) – Haru No Umi, Michio Miyagi (Showpieces, Galway, Novello); Elementary Division (grade 6 & under) – A Distant Horizon, Ricky Lombardo (Solo Spotlight, LMP). Must be recorded with piano, expect elementary level.
      3. Final round – Senior Division – Hymn of Pan, Charles Delaney (Little Piper); Junior Division - Reflections, Katherine Hoover (Papagena Press); Elementary Division – A Distant Horizon, Ricky Lombardo (LMP)


    Adult Amateur Convention Performer Competition

    (replaces the Adult Amateur Competition)

    The Adult Amateur Performer Competition is for flutists, over the age of 25 (as of February 1, 2019), who study flute only as a hobby and reside in a Mid-Atlantic state as defined above. Applicants must not regularly receive income from playing or teaching the flute and not hold or be currently pursuing a degree in flute performance or music education above the bachelor's degree. Flutists will be selected on the basis of their recorded audition to perform at the convention. All works for flute and keyboard must be recorded using both instruments. Some flutists, at the discretion of the committee, may also be selected to perform other works. Staff accompanist will be provided at no fee to the selected performers. Previous winners of the  Adult Amateur Competition ARE eligible for this competition. 

      1. Application fee $25
      2. Submit a recording containing music the applicant wishes to perform in recital, if selected, not to exceed ten (10) minutes.


    Guest Artist Master Class Performers

    Flutists of the highest caliber will be selected to perform in the class at the Convention. Music written for flute and keyboard must be recorded using both instruments. Flutists performing on the 2018 guest artist Master Class are not eligible to participate in the 2019 Master class. Applicants must reside or attend school in a Mid-Atlantic state as defined above.

      1. Application fee $15.
      2. Submit recording containing music the applicant wishes to perform in the class, if selected.
      3. Recording must not exceed 10 minutes.


    Student Master Class Performers

    Young flutists will be selected to perform for the class, taught by local artists and teachers, at the Convention. The class is open to all students in grade 12 and under who attend school or are home-schooled in a Mid-Atlantic state as defined above. Music written for flute and keyboard must be recorded with both instruments, piano or music accompaniment track. Flutists who performed in a student Master Class at the 2018 convention are not eligible to participate in the 2019 class.

      1. Application fee $15.
      2. Submit a recording containing music of your choice, not to exceed 5 minutes.


    Mid-Atlantic High School Flute Choir

    The Mid-Atlantic High School Flute Choir is open to all high school students in grade 9-12 who attend school or are home-schooled in a Mid-Atlantic state as defined above. Members of this choir are selected on the basis of a recorded audition. The choir will rehearse during the Convention weekend, beginning Friday evening, culminating with a concert. Selected choir members are required to be in attendance at all scheduled rehearsals over the weekend, no exception. Music written for flute and keyboard must be recorded with both instruments, piano or music accompaniment track.

      1. Application fee $15.
      2. Submit a recording containing:
    a.   a chromatic scale, three octaves, sixteenth notes at metronome marking = 80; slur up the scale, tongue two/slur two down the scale and the required repertoire.
            b.   Air à l’Italien from Suite in A minor, GF Telemann. Do not record the DS returning to the Largo section.                                                                  This selection must be recorded in a continuous  performance.  
            c.   Applicants wishing to perform on piccolo should include a recording containing The Toreador Song, Bizet, available online download purchase            https://www.sheetmusicdirect.com/en-US/se/ID_No/316870/Product.aspx
